Joshua Strodtham

Joshua “Castro” Strodtman is the apprentice of legendary Ivory Coast djembe artist, Dr. Djo Bi, under whose blessing Joshua performs and teaches Dr. Djo-Bi’s world famous Topalon Technique & Rhythms.

Beginning at 8 years of age, Joshua began his study of various instruments and musical styles, including reggae, rock, jazz, hip-hop, and gospel; all of which have influenced his style of djembe drumming. Joshua fell in love with djembe at age 18, when he found his first teacher of traditional African drumming - Ivorian djembe drummer Blaise Zekalo. Blaise put Joshua on a path of rigorous instruction and training, and his newly discovered passion for djembe eventually led him to found a traditional drumming school in Indianapolis, and to learn the craft of djembe carving and building. In 2009, Joshua began his apprenticeship with Dr. Djo Bi, and was soon on tour with him. His experience with Dr. Djo Bi gave him the opportunity to delve deep into the culture of Ivorian drumming, and the unique technique of the Topalon style. He also learned how to effectively teach and pass it on to others. Known for his unique style of djembe drumming, Joshua moves audiences with his performances, and in his workshops, he offers a bridge between Traditional African and Drum Circle culture and drumming.
